In what ways do emotion and reason justify balance in ethics?
See: the argument that tuition at the Cooper Union should be free because of the founding principles that education should be available to all and not priced. Balance referring to the school's physical ability to balance their budget, and how their financial situation balances with their moral code.

Ethics are defined as the moral principles that govern a person's or a groups decisions. With this in mind, this knowledge questions ties so well with the Cooper Union example from the video. The group of students all had the belief that Cooper Union should stay free from tuition costs. This was the belief that governed their occupation of the principle's office and they were driven by their emotions that cooper should stay free for all incoming freshmen.
ReplyDeleteNow the question talks about balance in ethics. I think that the balance is the balance of education costs. As the video states, college costs are so high that more and more students has to go into debts of over 25,000 dollars to even scrape by.
In the video, there were many reasons as to why balance of higher education costs is important. First of all, the US previously had a good balance of education and costs; however the video states that the state funds went lower as tuition costs went higher, disrupting the balance. Reasoning can justify that this imbalance is imbalance. Some can argue that the rise of higher tuition costs is inevitable, but tuition costs more because of the professors used in the school. Better professors may mean higher eduction, but is it worth the high compensation that the school must pay to the professors?
On a side note, I think that maybe the word balance can be changed. The word balance kinda causes the knowledge question to be based solely on the documentary. Even if there was another example that fits the knowledge question, the word balance kinda causes the knowledge question to be too focused. I think that the knowledge question can be better worded as "In what ways do emotion and reason justify the ethics of monetary balance."
